Remapping, Macros & Chords

Make any button do something new — swap it, combine it into a chord, chain it into a recorded macro, or rapid-fire it with turbo. It all ships today, built in a visual editor.

What ships today

Two-layer button remapping

Remap buttons at two levels, most-specific-wins — configured live in Settings → Controllers by clicking a button and pressing the one you want (Delete clears):

Per-Emulator

Your baseline for one emulator — applies to every game on it unless overridden.

Per-Game

Fine-tune one title — inherits from the Emulator level.

Nintendo-labeled pads get their A/B and X/Y swapped automatically when The Vault writes each emulator's config, so they feel right without any toggle. Remaps take effect through Keyboard Mode.

Controller-combo actions

A full combo → action engine already exists via controller-combo running scripts: write controller+l1+triangle {} and any button combo fires whatever you want, using universal button names that work across DualSense, Xbox, and Nintendo pads.

💡 Two front-ends, one engine

Every chord, macro, and turbo you set in the visual editor is the same engine you can also drive from running scripts — use whichever you prefer.

The visual editor

A no-scripting editor for combos, macros, and turbo — modeled on reWASD, the gold-standard remapper, and built on the two layers above. Open it from Settings → Controllers → Configure; here's the shape of it:

🔥 Why we can't just be reWASD

reWASD outputs a virtual controller (Windows-only, via ViGEmBus — macOS has no ungated equivalent). The Vault does keyboard translation and owns both sides: it writes the emulator's key bindings and forwards the keystrokes — so unlike a generic Mac remapper, you never hand-align keys.

Recording macros

For multi-step sequences, Macro Studio records the buttons you press with their real timing, so a macro plays back exactly as performed — then bind it to a chord like any other action. Turbo is a toggle on any button (rapid-fire at a set rate while held).
